LMI Holdings Mega Warehouse in Ghana Awarded IFC EDGE Green Building Certification

LMI Holdings Mega Warehouse has received the International Financial Corporation (IFC) Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) Green Building Certification, making it the first warehouse in Ghana to receive this certification.

LMI Holdings, a leader in Ghana’s development space and the primary developer of the Tema Free Zone Area (Tema FZ) hosts over 80 companies in sectors including building materials, manufacturing, and agro-processing. The Mega Warehouse’s focus on efficient energy and water usage, along with the use of low-carbon construction materials such as cement, steel, and glass, has earned it this recognition.

The EDGE green building certification program, supported by the UK government with initial funding from Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) recognizes LMI’s innovative technology and designs that are expected to achieve a 26% reduction in energy use, a 20% reduction in water use, and a 73% reduction in embodied carbon in materials. The 100,000 square meter LMI Mega Warehouse includes sustainability features such as a reduced Window-to-Wall Ratio, a reflective roof, high-performance glass, efficient ceiling fans, efficient water fixtures, and low-carbon material that reflects LMI’s commitment to environmental conservation.

“We are honored to receive the IFC Green Buildings EDGE Certification and see it as a testament to our dedication to environmental responsibility,” said Kojo Aduhene, LMI’s CEO. “Our team is committed to continuous innovation, and this recognition fuels our passion to set new industry standards for eco-friendly operations.”

This green certification aligns with LMIs broader sustainability vision, which is further supported by a $30 million loan from IFC in 2022 to develop a 16.8 MWp rooftop solar plant to power businesses operating in the Tema FZ, which is projected to increase Ghana’s solar capacity by 9 percent and reduce Co2 emissions by over 10,000 tons per year.

In his congratulatory speech, Kyle Kelhofer, IFC’s Senior Country Manager for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, said, “The EDGE Green Building Certification awarded to LMI Holdings Mega Warehouse is a significant step forward for sustainable industrial development in Ghana and sets a benchmark for the sector. At IFC we are glad to support eco-initiatives that foster economic and environmental benefits.”

EDGE certification recognizes businesses that are committed to sustainable practices and show leadership in green initiatives within their industry. IFC sets universal standards for green construction through EDGE, a software application and certification system that is helping developers design energy-efficient and cost-effective buildings with low emissions. IFC also works with financiers, governments, developers, and building owners to scale up the development of green buildings in emerging markets.
